Outkast has us marching to the beat of their drum with 'Idlewild', a Gem of Black Cinema (Hell, cinema in general). Our ratings are based on child development best practices. In this showcase film for the rap duo OutKast, Percival, the piano playing son of a local undertaker, and Rooster, the orphaned descendent of a bootlegger, are unlikely friends living in the backwater Georgia town of Idlewild. The plot was surprisingly well thought out. Say HELLO DOLLY and where is the RENT! At the end of the film, Rooster puts his whiskey flask in the back of a closet (a symbolic turning away from his old life). The modern genre may find its roots in the jazz of this period, but the typical rap lyric OutKast is known for today seems completely alien to everything else going on. In a wall-smashing, guns-blazing fight (in which at least two more men die) Rooster is shot and is only saved because the bullet strikes the Bible in his pocket. It had a certain symmetry, yet was not completely predictable. It took me back. If this is how good the Idlewild movie is, imagine how good the Stankonia movie would have been. The s-word and “d–n” make about 20 appearances each. The film serves as one big musical containing new original music and some songs from their 2003 diamond selling CD "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below", and is the directorial film debut of their long-time music video collaborator Byran Barber. It was a far better mystery/suspense/gangster film than most. a dignity so poingant and artful, that it shattered the constructs of representation of sexual acts in one very artfully presented love scene. Idlewild was one of the best movies I've seen in the last few years. It includes stylized and graphic violence, mostly beatings and shootings of male gangsters, with bloody results (a woman is also shot, though she dies more "delicately" and melodramatically). How does Percival's decision to follow his dreams and leave his father's business affect his father? Idlewild Review. Morally grounded kids in the hood come of age. "Idlewild" is about two friends Percival (Andre 3000) and Rooster (Big Boi) that grow up in different lifestyles but have the same dream, that dream is make it out of Idlewild and into show business. Most of their material, even though much of it is anachronistic for a film set in the 1930s, nonetheless, fit the movie quite well. | This movie was the best musical that I have seen in so many years. Idlewild is a movie that tries to attain great musical heights, but fails as often as it succeeds. While Rooster must figure out a way to stay ahead of Trumpy, Ace’s killer. Percival has his own problems, trying to balance work with playing the piano at night, while also falling in love with new singer Angel (Paula Patton). It also ran an array of emotional tracks. Back together, Rooster and Zora buy an orchard (a dream they always had) and start a new life. Rooster and Rose (Ace’s girlfriend) are shown having loud, vocal sex in the back seat of a car. The Director failed this exceptional cast - but we're happy that the film was made. This movie gives us a little song, a little dance, a little razzle-dazzle and also provides us with a story that is interesting and feasible. The music was fantastic, the dancing was unbelievably good, the story was good. Then I read the cast and rented it just on the cast. Suggest an update to this review. We display the minimum age for which content is developmentally appropriate. Casting and acting was a big plus - stellar performances all around. Every cut and angle put you right in the middle of the frenzied action going on in "The Church". The stories revolve around people that are involved in supplying booze, music, and dancing for a small city club. This film is one of the greatest achievements in cinema in DECADES. Ace and Spats are both shot in cold blood by Trumpy, who hopes to take over their businesses. Much of it is funny, but people get killed. He cautiously approaches it (with gun drawn) and discovers an elderly woman stranded with five grandchildren and no money. If you want to see this film with your kids, then it's better if you make sure that they will be mature about nudity. Percival comes to Angel’s aid and helps her find the courage to reach for her dreams of being a singer. Your privacy is important to us. The kids part ways, except for when Percival plays piano in "Church," the speakeasy/whorehouse where Rooster keeps the books and sings. She delivered it very well and her singing was good. The story line between Percival and Angel was the only one I found natural and plausible. After spending more than two decades touring, directing, writing and producing for Christian theater and radio (most recently for Adventures in Odyssey, which he still contributes to), Bob joined the Plugged In staff to help us focus more heavily on video games.
